Before and After Seattle Sorority House

Two years ago,  our firm delightfully provided updating to Chi Omega Sorority, University of Washington. This is a before and after story with plenty of visuals to capture the transformation.

The sorority corporation board selected our firm to complete and update the formal living room salon and adjacent study areas. The formal living room is on the Tudor side and was last updated in 1994.

Before we started we took a tour with the board and took lots of photographs to document the areas for design work.

The style of the Salon was very formal and traditional and featured awkward seating for studying, socializing and formal events.  Using a Pinterest board, the students shared a vision that is more youthful but still formal to complement the style of the home and a reflection of them.  So think light colors, contemporary lighting and furnishings that relate to the existing architecture. Usually 100 young women reside here during the academic school year.

Top priority:  increase the number of available seats and charging stations for today’s mobile devices so students can gather on projects and easily move from group to group.

The before and after transformation features refinished hardwood floors and wool area rugs to anchor the seating areas. A neutral paint similar to the color in the adjacent mid-century space unified the two areas while brightening the Salon. Large contemporary chandeliers added sparkle and improved lighting in all areas plus LED lamps for energy savings.

Clean lined wing chairs on the walls and swivel chairs and sofas in the center of the room allow circulation. Nine small seat ottomans are movable to combine with larger leather ottomans around the seating. Six poufs are stored under the console tables for a tidy appearance. Two round tables with four chairs each anchor the end of the room as work areas for study.

A separate study room is nearby for another six seats with a wool area rug below. Using performance fabrics on all furnishings allowed lighter colors to support a fresh, clean design and the updated look that the sorority requested.

Lots of accent pillows repeat the color scheme and can readily be moved from the Salon furnishings to the seating in the adjacent mid-century so flow is created from area to area.

Adding a finishing touch to the before and after: A new contemporary painting above the fireplace mantel refreshes the room while existing mirrors and memorabilia maintain the history of the sorority.
